Newsletter Summer 2015

Dear yogis, yoginis and friends,

Namaste and a happy summer to all.

In June we had the first international yoga day. The UN has declared June 21th, the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere as the International Yoga day.
Lord Shiva, the first yoga practitioner (Adi Yogi) is said to have begun imparting the knowledge of yoga to the rest of mankind on this day and became the first guru (Adi Guru).

On the 20th of August is the first aniversary of the death of Guruji Iyengar but his teachings feel very present on our daily practice.

This year in February we had another fantastic yoga holiday in Ashiyana, it was very well attended with people from different parts of the world.

Ashiyana is an exquisite venue on one of the best beaches in Goa. We practiced yoga asana in the mornings in the round yoga shala. Afterwards we had a delicious brunch with healthy Indian goodies, tropical fruit, home made bread, cashew butter and jams and much more, all prepared by the wonderful group of Nepalese staff.

We spent lazy afternoons relaxing on the beach and exploring the surroundings. Late in the afternoon we had a second yoga session with restorative asanas and Pranayama. In the evening we had a fantastic dinner and the opportunity to attend some of the events that Ashiyana offer; like many different types of mediatation, dance, chanting and even a film night.

I would like to thank very much all contributors to the charity set up by Ashiyana to support the Nepalese staff whose families were affected by the earthquake.

Due to lack of space at the Iyengar Yoga Institute (Maida Vale), the Study Group of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali has not been able to meet this year. If you know of a suitable place were we can meet, please let me know, also let me know if you are still interested in continuing with our yoga philosophy discussions.

In less than a month I will be teaching a yoga holiday in Crete (Sept 8th - 15th).

The difficult Greek situation has created uncertainty in the number of people travelling to this beautiful land but despite this we are still going anyway.

One of the best ways to support Greece is to continue to visit the country and support local family businesses. I'm committed to continuing to bring people to Greece and run the Yoga Holidays as I have been doing for the last 4 years.

There are still some spaces, do join us.

In October 2015 I will be going back to Mexico for the second Teacher Training session. Again I will be delighted to have Jawahar teaching part of it.

The rest of the time I will continue with my classes in London.

I hope to continue seeing you on your mat somewhere in the near future.

Guruji Iyengar life celebration !

"While the mind leads to thoughts, the intellect leads to intelligence and ultimately wisdom.

Yoga identifies these different parts of our consciousness, along with their accompanying fluctuations (vrttis) in such a way that we can use them both to give our journey direction and to result in our transformation. In this way, we discover the ability to refuse ice cream or to accept it, but in quantities that will not be harmful. We increasingly develop judicious discrimination that, harnessed to self-control, enables us to set sail in uncharted waters."

Iyengar Yoga Holiday in Goa, India. Feb 21st - 28th 2016
Booking is now open!!!!!  book soon, places are going fast.

When you practice yoga in India it feels like the universe supports you! Goa is spiritual and fun. Ashiyana Yoga Retreat is a beautiful place, minutes away from the best beach in North Goa. Purify and cleanse with organic food and holistic therapies. Sleep in a comfortable bed and listen to the sound of the ocean. Stroll along white-sand beaches with swaying coconut palms. Shop at the famous Anjuna market. Sip chai at a beach shack while the sun sets over the Arabian sea. Hire a scooter and explore colourful seaside villages, Portuguese mansions, Hindu temples and lush spice plantations.

The focus, of course, is Yoga - on and off the mat - to enhance your appreciation of all that is around you. We will practise yoga twice per day: the morning session (7.30 am – 9.30 am) will consist of asanas to strengthen the body while the evening session (5 pm – 6:30 pm) will focus on recuperative asanas and pranayama.
We will have a yoga adventure in the mystical land of its birth and get to the spiritual heart of the practice.

Yoga equipment will be provided by the resort. There are three fully equipped yoga shalas in the grounds.

The price for the week depends on your accommodation. Please see the web site: www.yogamparo.co.uk
